Course Overview:

One-day hands-on course of basic Point of Care ultrasound (POCUS), covering the core indications of POCUS (eFAST, aorta, basic cardiac, and pelvis) that is recognized and approved by the Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society (CPoCUS) as a required course prior to undergoing the IP certification process.

In addition, you will also learn to perform parasternal long and short axis cardiac echocardiogram to assess basic LV function

The course is intended as a basic POCUS course for medical students, residents in Family Medicine, emergency medicine and critical care, as well as faculty interested in getting introduced to the art of POCUS.

Our objectives parallel the philosophy of CPoCUS: to promote the safe use of POCUS as a routine bedside tool, to teach rigorous methodology and scanning techniques in order to perfect image generation and image interpretation.

  • All learners are provided with pre-course reading, pre-tests and videos to prepare for the didactic lectures

  • 6 hours of hands-on scanning with 2:1 learner to instructor ratio. All bedside instructors are CPoCUS IP certified.

  • Opportunity to scan patients with actual pathology (AAA, Free fluid, pericardial effusion), women with 1st trimester pregnancy as well as endovaginal ultrasound on live models.

  • Takes place in the state of the art McGill Simulation Centre.
